The room is just like the pictures. They look updated and are very spacious. After settling in for the night, we realized they had flying roaches. We killed two. There's too much activity outside at night. I believe (Not 100% sure) I saw a drug deal happening while going to my car. The person above us played loud music until almost 6am. The pull out sofa had stains.. very dark stains.. can't even imagine what that was... and the room had an odor. Because of the hurricane, this was the only room we could find out of harms way that was affordable. I would NOT stay here if you can help it. The property really has the potential to be great, because really they're just like studio apartments.. equipped with a full kitchen and the beds were comfortable.. but they definitely need some direction.

Good place to stay. Bfast offered. I would recommend the pent house suite. Friendly staff. Drinks sold there also. Near shopping centers.
Conclusion, the manager should be replaced and the owners reprimanded for their failure to satisfy guests if this is their manner to save money to increase their bottom line. $114 paid was too much for this disaster.
The rooms were nice but the floor was gross, it also had a balcony which is always a plus. Everything was cool until I was visited by a staff member who immediately accused me of my payment not going through as soon as I opened the door. She kept pointing to a list of names and room numbers saying I needed to go down to the front office and talk to them because "I don't have any money". I tried telling her the name on her sheet isn't my name and she probably had an outdated sheet. I had already seen the charge on my account so I wasn't too worried about this The staff member was nearly incoherent with the mixture of emotions, her accent, and how fast she was speaking so I just told her I would go down and talk to them. I did, she did have an outdated sheet. I filled a complaint with the manager.
Fifth and worst, we came down to breakfast at 8:35AM. 9AM is last call. No more coffee, just decafe. The multiple choice juice dispenser was out. No electricity. No knives. A certain cereal flavor our son enjoys was sold out too. One guest was very angry about these failures and the manager acted as though she couldn't care less. No control of the situation. No effort to solve it or try to comfort the guests. Several, yes several other guests also complained in the breakfast area about problems with no towels, no replenishing of breakfast choices. It wasn't 9 AM yet.
Fourth, flying insects seen in bathroom, sink area and sleeping areas.
Second, The walkways seem to be never cleared of leaves from the many trees and the pavement needs cleaning.
First, no towels. Called the front desk and an employee was very prompt to bring us plenty of towels.
Third, the outdoor grill kitchen at pool side looked unsanitary.
Hawthorn Suites in North Charleston could be a wonderful alternative to the well known chain hotels. Hawthorn seems to have been a rental/condo apartment residence years ago but possibly failed or bankruptcy or sold to hotel instead. The rooms are spacious with kitchenette, could be comfortable place to stay with some charm BUT they have problems.
